SHAH ALAM: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday called on university students to uphold the principle of intellectual honesty in evaluating or scrutinizing issues.

They must use their wisdom to screen and evaluate the information they received, he said, when closing the Muslim Students Leadership Convention at Universiti Teknologi Mara here. Najib said students should not be taken in by or engage in rumourmongering. “We understand that the era of government that knows everything has passed. Nonetheless, no one can monopolise the truth.” He said all activities planned by university student leaders must be relevant to current needs and in this context, the students must emphasise the needs of youth. Najib also called on graduates to fill their minds with knowledge. They must be multilingual, be able to multi-task and be multiskilled because they would be facing a war of the mind instead of a military or physical war.

Najib said students were the country’s future leaders and their leadership was crucial because according to Imam Al-Ghazali, if the youth of a country were good, then the future of the country was in the hands of those who could be relied upon. “My assurance as the prime minister is that the government will always give its full support to initiatives in developing new leaders who are trained according to proper leadership principles. “It is important that the undergraduates are not diverted from the right track,” he said. Actions that are of no benefit to the students or the community should be avoided.

At the function, Najib also launched the “Kelab Damai IPTA” or Tertiary Institutions’ Islamic Hadhari Charity Organisation, which is the apex body for Islamic organisations in public institutions of higher learning. He was confident that Kelab Damai would provide a platform for turning out future leaders.
